Nestled in the coveted Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles, California, this mid-century modern gem, originally built in 1963, has undergone a thoughtful restoration. Designed by native Angeleno Jordan Bakva, the project seamlessly blends timeless mid-century charm with contemporary innovation, drawing inspiration from the iconic Case Study Houses while honoring the home’s rich architectural heritage.

Architectural Integrity Meets Modern Functionality

When designer Jordan Bakva first encountered the home, it was an overgrown, hidden time capsule of mid-century design. From its exterior brick walls reminiscent of Palm Springs elegance to its terrazzo entry and kidney-shaped pool, the property exuded character. However, updating the space while maintaining its architectural integrity was a delicate challenge.

For example, the primary bathroom’s sunken bathtub—a quintessential yet dated mid-century feature—was modernised using Ceppo marble and hand-finished micro cement for a fresh look. A walk-in closet was created by narrowing the entrance hall and reimagining the layout, ensuring the home met contemporary expectations without losing its charm.

Warm Neutrality and Organic Materials

The restoration features a calming palette of off-whites accented by natural tones, such as beige and dark brown, with thoughtful pops of color. Ceppo Noir stone in the guest bathroom, Bronze Fantasy marble in the kitchen, and soft pink lime wash in the hall highlight the home’s warm, inviting aesthetic.

Organic materials, like white oak millwork and natural stones, create a cohesive flow throughout the space. Travertine adorns the guest bathrooms, while micro cement walls add a contemporary yet understated elegance. Brass fixtures and textured surfaces further enhance the tactile warmth.

A Strong Connection to Nature

The home’s design emphasises seamless indoor-outdoor living. Expansive pocketing doors connect each room to the surrounding landscape, creating a deep sense of connection to nature. Lime-washed walls and organic textures throughout evoke a serene and unpretentious atmosphere.
