Nestled in the scenic Huntingdonshire county, just Northwest of Cambridge, this Georgian, grade-listed country house has undergone a stunning transformation. Renovated for a British couple with a deep appreciation for colour, texture, and pattern, this residence embodies a timeless yet modern aesthetic, seamlessly blending heritage with contemporary flair.

The design, led by Katie Malik Design Studio, draws inspiration from the homeowners’ favourite holiday destination in Cornwall, as well as their impressive art collection. Through a carefully curated palette of blues, greens, and subtle touches of orange, this home captures both the spirit of the Cornish Riviera and the elegance of British classical interiors.

The Perfect Blend of Tradition and Modernity

From the outset, the homeowners made it clear that they wanted a home filled with vibrant colour and texture - no stark whites aside from the woodwork. Inspired by Cornwall’s breathtaking coastal landscapes, where shades of deep blues and verdant greens blend with the wild surf, the couple shared a collection of artworks and images from their frequent visits. These visual references helped Katie Malik craft a palette that would both complement the home’s historical architecture and embrace the couple’s contemporary sensibilities.

“The homeowners are drawn to rich, saturated hues,” says Malik, explaining how she used the colours of Cornwall as a starting point. The interior’s palette reflects the natural beauty of the Southwest coast, from the deep blues of the ocean to the greens of the lush countryside. Orange accents were added to offer a surprising contrast, infusing the space with warmth and energy.

A Home That Tells a Story

One of the most distinctive features of this home is how the interior design draws heavily on the couple’s personal tastes and history. The spaces are designed not just to look beautiful but to feel meaningful. A striking example of this is the bespoke in-wall aquarium situated in the dining room, where a Cornish sea wave artwork is strategically hung behind it. The aquarium, not only a visual marvel, also creates a connection to the outside world by allowing light to flow from the back dining window into the hallway. It’s a perfect example of how functional elements in design can be elevated into something extraordinary.

Throughout the home, bespoke joinery plays a significant role. The carefully selected mix of painted wood and natural oak or walnut gives each room a sense of warmth and depth. In the lounge, where the bold palette of royal blue and traditional patterns takes centre stage, the natural oak joinery contrasts beautifully with the vibrant hues of the upholstery.

Katie Malik’s use of colour extends beyond the furniture and walls, finding its way into unexpected details such as the hand-drawn woodland animal tiles adorning the utility room. The artist-created designs were printed on tiles that complement the colour scheme and serve as a unique touch in an otherwise functional space.

In the kitchen, the layout was completely reworked to optimize natural light. Tall, light blue cabinetry draws the eye upward, creating a sense of space, while a central island with a breakfast bar adds practicality. The kitchen's chevron-style wood tiles and a distinctive warm orange accent in the dining area perfectly marry the homeowners’ love for both wood and vibrant colour.

Luxurious Living with a Personal Touch

Each room in this home is a masterclass in how to combine comfort, luxury, and individuality. The main bedroom, for example, has been divided into three distinct zones - sleeping, dressing, and reading - each with its own set of specific furniture and finishes. The custom oak headboard wraps around the beams, ensuring that no space is wasted. Even the bathroom continues the design themes from the bedroom, creating a cohesive flow throughout the home.

An Inviting Atmosphere for Every Occasion

The dining room is another example of how carefully chosen design elements elevate this home. A custom-made dresser unit provides a display for the homeowners’ glassware, with LED lighting subtly accentuating the shelves.

In the lounge, the challenge was to balance multiple focal points, including a cosy log burner and the expansive French doors that open to the garden. The solution was a twin sofa arrangement, with one set facing the garden and the other positioned to enjoy the warmth of the fire.

This project is a stunning example of how contemporary design can breathe new life into a historic home, without compromising its character. Through the thoughtful use of colour, bespoke furniture, and custom features, Katie Malik has crafted a space that is both timeless and entirely reflective of its owners’ personalities.
