As the warmer seasons arrive, we’re all about having friends and loved ones over for drinks, dinner and soaking up the sunshine. The humble cheeseboard is still a beloved hosting favourite, even if the viral butter board is coming for its title. But what do you pick to put on the board in the first place? Think about texture, colour and shape and mostly, what flavours you love! Let’s have a look at some you can add to your board.
Soft cheese
There might be a cheese you already gravitate towards, and soft cheese (think brie, feta and ricotta) adds a variety of flavours to any board. They’re usually easy to spread and can be intense or mild to the palate.
Hard cheese
The name gives it away, this is a relatively firm cheese that you’ve most likely had on toast, a sandwich or pizza.The harder cheeses can be defined as ones that have been aged for a time, and refer to gouda, cheddar, pecorino and emmental.
Blue cheese
This semi-soft cheese is known for it’s distinctive blue-veined colour, caused by the introduction of the mould Penicillium in the production process. It’s an acquired taste but adds a really delicious flavour to any dish or cheese board. Explore the variants of this type of cheese with gorgonzola, roquefort or Stilton blue cheese.
Add fruits, crackers or meat
The hallmark of a great cheeseboard is how you customise it to your liking. If you love to have a fruity touch to your cheese board, add some freshly picked grapes. Your cheese selection will pair well with crackers or any starch product. And finally, if you love a salty meat addition, why not roll up some salami, weave some thinly sliced prosciutto.
