Picture this: A vibrant food and cultural market that brings the best of the city together under one roof. The city’s best chefs, drinks and cultural experiences converge at the Time Out Market Cape Town, the first Time Out Market to open on the African continent.
Since Time Out Market Cape Town opened in November, we have been loving the culinary offerings of the market. From How Bao Now by chef duo Matt Van Den Berg and Carla Schulze to Stellenbosch’s favourite burger joint De Vrije Burger by Restaurateur and Chef Bertus Basson, we have rounded up our favourite picks from Time Out Market to help you plan your next visit.
Top Halaal Options
Time Out Market offers some of the best halaal options in the luxurious culinary scene. We recommend visiting Barakat by Chef Anwar Abdullatief and Chef Yolani Abrahamsfor modern Cape Malay cuisine like their char grilled cabbage or slow braised ossobuco (beef shin). For a unique flavourful explosion, try the delicous pani puri and dahi puri from Kapoochka by Chef Hitesh Panchal who brings Mumbai’s street food to South Africa’s shore.
Hold on to Your Chopsticks for Ramen and Sushi
The Time Out Market has no shortage of authentic and delicious Asian food options. Our picks are definitely Ramenhead for moreish bowls of ramen nooodles and Sushiya for some of South Africa’s most authentic sushi offerings.
At Sushiya, meaning “Sushi Shop", Chef Peter Tempelhoff (of The World’s 50 Best Restaurants, FYN), partnered with Chef Shin Takagi – of two-star Michelin restaurant Zeniya in Kanazawa, Japan – to offer authentic contemporary Japanese sushi.
For instance, the rice used is grown in Shin’s native Ishikawa, is nurtured by fourth-generation rice growers and aged for up to two years before being cooked in Cape mountain spring waters. For truly unique sushi, we recommend the trying the nigiri platter for a flight of fresh fish.
Simple soul food
If you aren’t looking for the fanciest fair at Time Out Market, YARD by Eugene Smith has your back with an incredible pizza line-up. Known as a Cape Town food institution for pizza, burgers, and “rude” waiters since opening in 2011, it is only fitting that a YARD pizza had a seat at the table. Whether you’re in the mood for a fabulous Neapolitan-style pizza with a divine fluffy crust, or a larger New-York-style slice, there are plenty of options to choose from at YARD.
