Situated in a luxurious neighbourhood a stone’s throw away from Vancouver’s Whistler Village, this 622-square-metre Nordic-inspired contemporary home fosters an idyllic, elegant family retreat. Enjoyed by an active and adventurous American couple and their two children, the Whistler escape is perfectly refined for indulging in the homeowners’ fondness for winter and summer sports.
Perched atop a hill, the home states a grand yet cosy character, with finishes clad in steel, stone and wood. ‘The challenge with any mountain home is to create something that feels enveloping without being heavy or imposing,’ says interior designer Kelly Deck. ‘Our challenge was to create a sense of harmony and make the home feel warm and inviting, yet fresh and reflective of the family that lives here.’
Through Kelly Deck Design’s careful selection of materials and colour, a certain intimacy is achieved: walls of German White Oak cultivate a lightness and comfort throughout, while accents of Statuario Marble harness the visual movement of the stone to allude to the mountainous views beyond, creating a harmonious dialogue between indoors and out.
In the spirit of Nordic sensibility, Deck adopted a neutral, minimalist palette of white, black, grey, and wood. Soft bursts of pink, lilac, and mustard offset and cushion the bolder charcoal structure and fixtures. Furnished, lit, and accessorised by B&B Italia, HAY, and Patricia Urquiola, this upscale interior is complemented by a feeling of familiarity and play.
Designed in a U-shape, the main floor leads to an inner courtyard that features a fire pit and a hot tub, encouraging a communal space at the heart of the home. Inside, the TV den, great room, guest ensuite, laundry, steam room, powder room, kitchen, dining area, and butler’s pantry nurture the fluidity of the floorplan.
The playroom and two guest bedrooms on the lower level open out onto either garden or patio space and on the third floor, two full principal suites, a laundry, and two children’s bedrooms cater for the multiple generations that may visit the home simultaneously.
The Whistler home is inspired by the effortless serenity of its surrounding landscape and seeks to create a contrast between organic and sculptural beauty. ‘In mountain homes like this one, you are always trying to strike a delicate balance,’ Deck says. ‘The world outside the home is rugged, so the environment inside needs to be reassuring.’
