Maison is an online shop sourcing vintage furniture based in Cape Town. The business was launched in the middle of lockdown and this strange timing ended up working in their favour with people spending more time at home and realising the importance of investing in their own interiors. Their greatest pride is being able to give more options to South Africans willing to purchase furniture mindfully, as they believe that these options are still too scarce
VINTAGE CLUB
Vintage Club is an online store in Cape Town that sells timeless vintage, mid-century modern, retro, and antique furniture. The husband-and-wife team are avid collectors dedicated to sourcing, curating, and refinishing furniture pieces. They have a small but very carefully selected range of authentic and beautifully crafted vintage furniture, mainly from the 1940s to 1970s.
RE-TREND
Re-trend in Parkhurst, Johannesburg offers restored mid-century modern, vintage, retro, and collectible furniture that’s ready to be placed in your home. A lot of time and effort is spent on restoration, and they run a very hands-on workshop with a dedicated team on site. They are highly skilled in re-upholstering items with top-quality fabrics, which they then resell. They also offer restoration services to the public.
JUNKIE VINTAGE HUYS
Junkie Vintage Huys functions mainly as an online shop but the store is also located in Somerset West, Cape Town, and is open on Saturdays from 9am-1pm. The store sells a beautifully curated collection of top-notch vintage treasures. Ranging from kitchen items, decorative items such as pottery, vases, candlesticks, and figurines, to a few paintings, and some furniture pieces.
ASTRID VON BRUCKEN
Astrid von Brucken is an architect and interior designer. In her practice, she consults on interior projects and domestic architecture and refurbishes mid-century furniture from the ‘50s, ‘60s, and ‘70s. She also produces large, sculptural ceramic vessels and bas relief tile installations. She collects and sells wooden, steel and rattan modernist furniture, chalkware Brutalist lamp bases, and West German ceramics. You can meet her by arrangement at her Showroom located at 22 Hope Street in Gardens.
CAPE CITY MODERN
Cape City Modern is a small store selling vintage interior items with a mid-century focus, located near the Biscuit Mill in Woodstock, Cape Town. The owners of the store are consistently hunting throughout the country for both local and international design classics and other items that catch their eye. Starting in 2014 as a side hustle, it was a labour of love that made them kiss the 9 to 5 goodbye.
HUISRAAD MODERN
Huisraad Modern finds and restores vintage furniture and represents a handful of South African furniture designers. The store is a partnership between husband-and-wife duo, Ali van Wyk and Magriet Theron. They have also created their own ‘Huisraad’ range of retro armchairs that pays tribute to the elegance and playfulness of the modernist design of circa 1950’s furniture. Huisraad is predominantly an online shop but their workshop in Parow East, Cape Town, is open for visits from 9am to 4:30pm on weekdays.
