Ask just about anyone, and they’ll agree: cleaning a rug is an absolute homemaker nightmare. While we can’t promise that these steps will make the process a breeze, they will however help lighten the chore.
First step
It’s important to lift as much dirt as possible before you add any moisture to the rug. A quick sweep followed by a deep and thorough vacuuming will do the trick. Remember, skipping this step will only make a muddy mess once you apply your cleaning solution. Top tip: you can lessen your work by sticking to regular vacuuming. Regular vacuuming will lessen the need for deep cleaning with wet solutions.
Second step
Get all your tools and products ready. You’re going to want to apply your cleaning solution, and follow it with a quick but gentle scrub (a soft bristle brush is perfect), and soak up any excess moisture with a clean dry cloth. Having all these at hand will help make a quick job of the process.
Third step
If you’re only cleaning spots and stains, you’ll focus your cleaning solution and the scrubbing to that specific spot. If you’re looking to clean the entire rug, you might need a little space. In this case, an outdoor area is perfect, where you can gently lather up the surface of the rug, and hose it down with a pipe and let it air dry.
How to make your own cleaning solution
Baking soda and vinegar: this easy solution is rather effective due to the chemical reaction between the two ingredients. Once mixed, they create an oxygenated gas powered with bubbles that helps lift dirt and stains. Simply sprinkle the baking soda over the spots you wish to clean and add about a tablespoon of vinegar. Scrub gently and blot with a clean cloth.
Vinegar and water: this solution is a go-to for just about every surface, including rugs. It’s light, non-abrasive and does the job right. Mix one part vinegar with one part water and spritz the area you wish to clean, as always blot the area with the clean, dry cloth.
Top tip: no matter what type of cleaning solution you end up using, be sure to use it sparingly, your rug doesn’t need to saturated in products. Always keep things light and simple.
