A previously underutilised outdoor space is given a new lease on life and transformed into a thoughtful spot to relax, entertain, cook and play.

Nestled on a quiet crescent in Ontario, Canada, this family home boasts an impressive outdoor transformation designed by Erin Hannon-Watkinson, founder of Studio Ha/wa. Overlooking a serene forested conservation area, the new outdoor space serves as a perfect extension of the home, catering to the energetic lifestyle of a family of four and their beloved dog.

‘They knew that they wanted to do a complete overhaul to utilise the space and have multiple zones for function and groupings,’ remembers Erin. ‘They are very active and wanted to have a garden that facilitated outdoor fun and time with family and friends.’ The renovation included the addition of a pool, outdoor shower, dining pavilion with a fully equipped kitchen, and an abundance of lounging areas, all meticulously crafted to promote family gatherings and fun.

The revamped back garden spans 270 square metres and is organised into distinct zones, each with its own focal point. ‘We aimed to maximise the views of the lush greenery while creating a highly functional space for all seasons,’ Erin adds. The covered dining pavilion, with its textured shingles and robust beam structure, serves as a shaded retreat for alfresco dining, while the wood-burning fireplace of the lounge area offers warmth for chilly winter evenings.

A harmonious colour palette of neutrals - white, light grey and charcoal - paired with natural wood accents is found throughout. This calming backdrop allows the vibrant greens of the surrounding foliage to take centre stage. Erin ensured that the architectural elements integrated seamlessly with the home’s existing features, even matching the wood beams of the pavilion to the dark charcoal shutters of the home.

Collaborating with Martin Wade Landscape Architects, the outdoor living room is positioned to offer breathtaking views of the forest, while the pool area invites relaxation. High-quality, durable materials were chosen to minimise maintenance and environmental impact, including large-scale concrete pavers and a fibre cement roof for the pavilion.

‘This space is designed to be lived in, where family memories are made— whether cooling off in the pool during hot summer days or enjoying cosy evenings by the fire,’ Erin concludes. With its thoughtful design and emphasis on outdoor living, this back garden is truly a dream come true.
